Maria Leite earned a Fine Arts bachelor's degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1996. She worked as a set designer for over a decade, contributing to theater productions and teaching set design. In 2005, she moved to the United States, where she expanded her academic journey by earning a Master’s degree in Special Education, a Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Diversity Studies.
Currently, Maria serves as the Director of Institutional Assessment at the University of Florida. In this role, she integrates her expertise in assessment, diversity, and the arts by engaging in institutional task forces and initiatives that explore art-based approaches for mindfulness. She has presented her work at both national and international conferences, contributing to discussions on curriculum, assessment, and social justice in education.
Maria’s research interests include curriculum development, equity and inclusion in education, and decolonizing art education. She is particularly engaged in exploring how artistic methodologies can be used to foster mindfulness and social transformation. Through her academic and artistic lens, Maria continues to advocate for a more inclusive and reflective approach to education and institutional assessment.
