The artist and scientist in me are inseparably interwoven. Many aspects of both worlds unite in photography, enabling me to take an alternative view of the world and create new connections between elements of a scene.
For many years, my principal task as an experimental chemist was almost a passion: developing and producing novel, complex connections at the molecular level. In photography, I create fictitious, minimalist compositions using elements from nature and human-made technology. Both are united by an important aspect of my personality: the drive to creatively develop new things and transform them into tangible, visual objects comes from within me.
The focus of my work lies on small creatures or non-living subjects from nature, which are brought together with industrially produced elements. I aim to present this ‘nature versus technology’ contrast to the viewer while simultaneously dissolving it photographically, so that the ultimate result of each composition is an aesthetically harmonious unity. To achieve this, I rely primarily on the structures, shapes, and colors of the selected elements, combining perspective, the right lighting, and a minimalist presentation to create an emotionally engaging final piece. The clarity and order of the subjects, with defined lines and shapes, often play a significant role in the process.
And yet, the actual picture (the photograph) represents merely the first step of the artistic process. In a second step, I apply targeted digital post-editing to shape my artistic photographic vision of the piece. Adjustments to light, shadow, and contrast are consistently aimed at conveying my personal way of seeing, as well as amplifying the desired impact on the viewer. This step allows me, as an artist, to express myself creatively and freely, completely independent of the practical limitations that sometimes arise in the real world of close-up photography.
With my pictures, I intend to immerse the viewer in a macro-world beyond everyday experience, where nature and human-made technology interact in unconventional ways. With each image, the viewer steps into a visionary space where a short story about a living being from our engineered environment is told, and where, in the end, the two worlds merge into a unique entity.
During this process, images emerge that possess a novel aesthetic and mode of expression, enabling the viewer to experience something entirely new on an emotional level. However, the works are not meant to be purely aesthetic; they also carry a cognitive aspect. They help foster a better understanding of the coexistence between nature and technology, demonstrating that the two worlds are inseparably linked in a symbiotic relationship, complementing and mutually influencing one another.
